Description

Dryopteris erythrosora is an evergreen fern with stunning characteristics. In spring, it showcases bronze-coloured new fronds, which add a touch of elegance to its appearance. During autumn, the undersides of its leaves reveal vibrant orange-red ripe spores, creating a captivating display.

Reaching an ultimate height of 0.5-1 meter and spreading to a similar width, Dryopteris erythrosora thrives in various growing conditions. It can adapt to different soil types such as loam, chalk, sand, and clay. It prefers moist but well-drained soil, although it can also tolerate poorly drained or well-drained soil. The plant shows versatility in terms of pH requirements and can grow in acidic, alkaline, or neutral conditions.

In terms of positioning, Dryopteris erythrosora prefers full shade or partial shade. It can be placed in east-, south-, north-, or west-facing aspects. The plant also prefers sheltered locations to protect it from harsh environmental conditions.

In terms of cultivation, this fern is relatively easy to grow. It thrives in cool, moist, and lightly shaded sites. While it can tolerate full sun, it requires ample moisture in such conditions. It can also tolerate dry shade, but regular watering is necessary during its first season. Mulching is recommended to retain moisture in the soil.

Propagation of Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance' can be done by sowing spores as soon as they are ripe or through division in spring.

This fern is suitable for various planting locations and garden types, including cottage and informal gardens, low-maintenance landscapes, flower borders and beds, as well as underplanting of roses and shrubs. Pruning is minimal and involves the removal of dead or damaged fronds as needed to maintain the plant's appearance and health.
